Home Energy Evaluations

To promote energy savings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the federal government - through Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) - frequently launches some home energy rebate or loan programs. These programs are often offered in partnership with the Ontario government, Enbridge, or IESO, and provide homeowners with access to various incentives or financing options. Typical eligible upgrades include adding insulation, installing heat pumps or heat pump water heaters, replacing furnaces, windows or doors. To qualify for rebates or loans, homeowners must hire a certified energy advisor to conduct both pre- and post-retrofit home energy evaluations. The advisor will then apply rebates for the homeowner.

As NRCan-certified Energy Advisor since 2008, Sen Lin is qualified to provide this service. As these programs are constantly evolving - sometimes available, sometimes not, and with changing eligible upgrades and rebate amounts. Please contact us for the latest information.

Even when no rebate or loan program is active, we can still provide professional home energy evaluation services for homeowners or builders. We will conduct on-site evaluations to collect detailed information about your home, then input that data into approved software to generate an energy evaluation report and rating label. Specifically, our service includes:

  • On-site evaluation: drawing floorplan sketches; measuring key dimensions; assessing insulation levels in the attic, walls, basement, etc.; reviewing your heating, cooling, hot water, fireplace, and ventilation systems; conducting a "Blower Door Test" to measure air leakage, and showing you where and how your home is leaking air and how to reduce drafts; performing a depressurization test to check for backdrafting risks, which can lead to carbon monoxide buildup from gas or wood-burning appliances.
  • Discussing your specific concerns about energy efficiency or comfort - for example, why your gas bill is unusually high, why a room feels especially cold, or which materials or equipment are most energy-efficient.
  • Energy Evaluation Report: a list of recommended upgrades and energy-saving results; a breakdown of your energy usage by space heating/cooling, water heating, lights and appliances; before and after charts showing heat loss by building components like attic, exterior walls, foundation, windows/doors, air leakage and ventilation; home energy rating in GJ/year before and after recommended upgrades; customized comments; tips for saving energy.
  • Energy Rating Label: a rated annual consumption in GJ/year, compared with a typical new house of the same size.

Our energy evaluations will pinpoint home inefficiencies and offer actionable recommendations to lower your energy bills, and increase the home comfort and value, while reducing your carbon emission.
